The Albuquerque Indian School (AIS) was founded in 1881 by the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions. It was first located in a single building in Duranes. In 1884 AIS relocated to a 66 acre lot in what is now the Near North Valley Neighborhood.
AIS was run in a militarized fashion which prepared many alum to succeed in the military.
